The plot is everything but mundane. It includes exotic settings filled with multi-dimensional characters in life-changing circumstances. First, there is an American woman journeying into sexual healing with an unconventional couple in Jerusalem. Then, there’s an ancient goddess temple that’s being threatened by a hypocritical priest. And finally, there is the prophet who is the mystical ancestral connection between them.
Although it’s a work of fiction it is profoundly educational, written by a revolutionary-minded rabbinical scholar. The Author shifts seamlessly between a formal writing style of the past, to one that is more casual and modern.
Caution ~ It takes a while to get accustomed to Hebrew prayers, Aramaic chanting, and so many strange old names like Eglah, Ishtar, Yehoash, Athaliah, Hezekiah, Asherah, but I promise, it’s worth the effort. You’ll eventually find it adds to the effect…whisking the reader into an unknown and exotic territory.
This is the second time I’ve read the book and believe it is one of my all-time favorites. Ranking high among spiritual novels such as The Alchemist, Damien, Celestine Prophesy, Red Tent, and Illusions. The book has a similar flavor as the Joy Luck Club. If you’re more of a movie buff, don’t worry, it also has a distinctly cinematic feel and I’d compare it to Dangerous Beauty or Bliss, which are also two of my favorite films.
